District 16

Bedok, Upper East Coast, Siglap

District 16 is largely a residential area which comprises Bedok, Upper East Coast Road and Chai Chee. Some commercial buildings such as Siglap Shopping Centre and Crescendo Building cater to the needs of the neighbourhood.

Bedok is an established and mature residential area popular for its East side connectivity and family centric living vibes. Eateries here are often featured in the press and blogs, while the many living options from HDB resale blocks in mature areas to established or newer condominiums create a vibrant real estate landscape. The significant number of residents who stay here is co-related to the Bedok New Town affordable housing units. Homes here are popular with those who grew up in the east but perhaps don’t want to pay the higher prices in places like Tanjong Rhu or Marine Parade. Bedok is surrounded by other areas such as Hougang, Paya Lebar, Tampines and Marine Parade. Families living in the east side of Singapore generally tend to like to live close to each other, amongst these districts – as the east side usually has a distinctive sense of familiarity to them.

Bedok is one of the native names that came into existence around the time of Sir Stamford Raffles and it got its name from Sungai Bedok, a river which is part of the present Tanah Merah. Bedok New Town is built around a unique landscaped park and sports complex. With 58,000 units of HDB flats, 2,700 executive units and 583 units of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDC) flats, it is home to some 200,000 residents.
